Shivesh Karan

Geospatial and environmental scientist

Bio

Hi, I'm Shivesh, an Indian scientist with a passion for maps and the environment. I have dedicated my academic journey to exploring the intersection of technology and the environment.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering, with a Master's and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering. I started my career as a Ph.D. student and teaching assistant at the Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) in India, where I conducted research on the vulnerability assessment of water resources due to coal mining.

In addition to my research, I also actively contributed to education. I developed teaching materials, laboratory practice materials, and problem sets for both undergraduate and graduate students. Furthermore, I supervised six master's theses, guiding and mentoring students in their research pursuits. During my academic journey, I have also had the opportunity to engage in scientific consultancy work for companies, where I provided advice and guidance on environmental issues. I also served as an instructor for a remote sensing and GIS course.

Following my Ph.D., I expanded my research experience through postdoctoral positions. I first worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) in Toulouse, France, where I focused on exploring bioeconomy strategies. This work involved developing innovative approaches to maximize the potential of residual resources in France.

I then embarked on a second postdoctoral position at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden. Here, I studied the use of biochar in Swedish agriculture, aiming to promote biochar as a negative emission technology.

Currently, I am working as a scientist in geomatics at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) in Norway. In this role, I use my expertise in technology and environmental science to analyze and interpret geospatial data for sustainable land management and resource allocation.

Beyond my professional endeavors, I find peace in nature. I am an avid hiker, and there's nothing more fulfilling to me than embarking on breathtaking trails and immersing myself in the beauty of this natural world. I also love driving and long road trips, as they allow me to explore more and embrace the freedom of the open road. Additionally, I love running as it serves as a means of both physical fitness and mental rejuvenation.
